Frank Neumann is the developer, founder, implementer and main owner (95%) of the Hortus Cyrenaicus. In 2021 he was inspired to build a kind of "Arch Noah" where he could live with his family when retiring not having any fear about energy prices, water resources or basic food supply. In the mean time, the Hortus Cyrenaicus did grow quite intense. Frank spent all his lifetime savings to realise the idea of having a place where people can live from what they plant and harvest and where the elementary supplies are provided.
To achieve this goal, one man will not be able to run such a big project alone. Frank decided to open Hortus for people with a similar mindset, who do not have a large amount of money and probably are also not willingly to take on such a risk...but who do have some kind of experience in certain areas of farming or in technological areas, to take care of machines or with life stock etc. Frank bought the land, took care of the water and electricity supply, built a fence around the area as well as the ecotourism sector in order to allocate funds for his pension when his savings are spent. Hortus Cyrenaicus consists of 5 hectars land, has its own water supply and a80 KW solar power plant in addition to solar thermic heating devices. In the basic map, it is shown that about 1 hectar land is foreseen for residents who would like to have their private territory. Here six plots of about 1.800 square meters each shall find their residents in 2025, hopefully. Frank is fully aware that it does need some training and coaching with the residents and him together in order to find their common agreement(s) for their community living. Here, the options are wide open, from sharing the overall workload of the current farming, starting with farming projects, livestock, bees, fish etc, or even for residents to do their individual things, eg. digital nomad living, pensioner living just on their own territory... In addition, the Hortus Cyrenaicus is seen as a place of training and dissemination as well as Art and Culture activities. Here a wide list of activities are foreseen where new residents are also more than welcome to join or take over their own part. To make the community able to live, it needs respect, understanding, readiness and communication. It would be a pleasure to see this happen. Frank would be more than happy finding reliable and interested people to join, support and take over their parts. |

From the first idea buying a “Château dans le Sud” to build an Ecovillage in the Greek Mountains, was “just a jump to the left – and then a step to the right…” End of 2021. Within a meditation session, there was suddenly a clear picture with the directive building a new “Arche Noah” for family, friends and similar minded people.
Frank finished the talking and discussion about what mother earth and its children need and start tp implement a vision, taking positive action for nature and the people. What better place to start such a project than Greece, the cradle of Philosophie, Democracy and Humanitarian disciplines…
Finding the place was a coincidence with destiny – buying the land took a while and transferring the rights even longer. The core reasons for choosing these plots were that the water drillings were already in place, along with the positive energy that the land sent out.
The name “Hortus Cyrenaicus” is related to Aristippos of Cyrene, a follower of Socrates who then built his own philosophical approach of “how to enjoy life”. There may have been misinterpretations that reflect on a hedonistic life style, but there could be also seen interpretations for living a “Happy Life” without existing “leadership” and unnecessary side impacts of “Civilisation” in harmony with the nature. This was the inspiration for the name “Hortus Cyrenaicus”.
– A garden of a happy life… a place to enjoy life with family and friends in a clean and sustainable way. Living in harmony and symbiosis with nature and transforming the philosophical idea of pleasure and enjoyment to the exploration and understanding of nature and the respect given to it. The rethinking of predicted values, procedures and processes - asking what is the most suitable for protecting the earth and providing an enjoyable condition for living. We love open and creative thinking but also applying concepts when we see them mature. We accept the freedom of thinking and speaking avoiding being disrespectful to others.
